Gemeinsam für nachhaltige Entwicklung - The future we want

On the basis of the last year’s successful initiative Rio+20 - Jugendliche ziehen Bilanz the Austrian Ministry for Science and Research (BMWF) and Young Science initiated once more a scientific summer internship programme for young students. Related to sustainability, future scenarios and scientific research, the BMWF financed once more 100 scientific internships in Austrian research institutions themed “Gemeinsam für nachhaltige Entwicklung – The future we want”. Oikodrom was again happy to welcome eight students in the age of 16-18 to one month of science, theory, research, practice and discussion.

Oikodrom focused on the question of poverty, development cooperation, development policies and discussions related to the current international EU-project nopoor. The highly motivated students carried out their own qualitative research on development cooperation projects. They did intense research, developed research questions, made interviews and wrote scientific reports on the question of development cooperation – concepts, sustainability and practice.

The first step was to analyse the framework of development cooperation in Austria: Experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Anton Mair, the ADA, Mr. Robert Zeiner, and Austrian political parties were interviewed and the results discussed and questioned. How is a faire, reasonable and sustainable development cooperation possible? Who is responsible? What should and can be changed?

The next step was to get a practical insight. Every student chose his/her own development cooperation project of an Austrian NGO. After an internet research they created an interview guideline and interviewed an expert/project manager of the chosen project. The results of the research are presented in a scientific paper as well as in a personal report and can be read here. Supervised by Heidi Dumreicher, Caroline Tagesen, Hanna Kribbel and Mahafuzul Haque, the students learned how to research, develop an interview-guideline, make an interview, transliterate an interview and write a scientific paper – all in all basis-competences of scientific qualitative research and social science.

Visions and future scenarios for a liveable better future with an eye on sustainability, equality and awareness raising was the ambitious aim which lead through the whole internship. “We hope that people change their narrow consciousness and to become aware of a good, healthy and worth living common future.”, according to the interns.

The reports are submitted to the OeAD which will publish selected reports of the different internships. The publication will be presented in public at the final event on January 13, 2014 in Vienna.
