Schritt für Schritt (Step by Step)
Possibilities for participation for female migrants in Austria.
Based on experiences of collaborations and former projects of Oikodrom in Vienna and within international cooperations we continue with an established set of participatory methods, that we put in an innovative context: between the actual situation of female migrants, the topics of sustainability and participation.
We focus on the involvement of this kind of groups of person, who empirically are seen as difficult to reach. In this project we will ask women as representatives of their families and invite them to participate actively. Women from different countries of origin will be invited to take part at our workshops. We do not choose classical demographic sampling, but we especially look for groups of women who have already a connection, something in common like for example a child in the same school class or as visitors of the same events. By this we will gain more diversity for optional activities and more possibilities for positive experiences and engagement.
As a starting point for participatory processes the direct environment is most suitable, therefore we meet the women in their daily life activities (child in school) and discuss important and relevant issues there. We set up the framework conditions for the workshops according to the special situations and needs of the participating women.
We know that the local surrounding of the home is very important for women. Especially the neighbourhood is of great relevance for women. According to this information, we are able to describe which services in the district are relevant for the topics of sustainability and public space and how to reach easily the important things you need in life.
We want to activate a process, which is able to sensitive and help the participating women (and maybe also their husbands) and which can be made visible for outsiders.
Our ambition is to develop and prove a suitable instrument with which it is possible to uncover the needs and perspectives of special groups of society- in this case of female migrants. Secondary we want to raise the societal value of these needs and perspectives - for benefits of female migrants and the society in general.
The results of this project should give instructions how to engage actively in public space. Public space with its rooms for encounters offers a very important arena for participation.
