Narrative scenario making for a sustainable future is a methodology that Oikodrom (Heidi Dumreicher) is developing in the large scale research projects that she is initiating.
These future scenarios of sustainability aim at coming up with scenarios that do not prolong the existing non sustainable socio ecomic or ecological systems, but at establishing a future perspective that transcends this kind of surrogate future that is often achieved when starting out from the situation as is.
The method of describing integrative visions for a sustainable future proves to be especially welcome in intercultural and interdisciplinary research approaches in order to work with a locally defined case study - especially in an urban context.
The desirable future scenarios start out by finding common agreements on non negotiable topics for each discipline, in a next research step leading to an interdisciplinary process which respects every discipline's declared non negotiable topics and coming up with commonly agreed future images and visions.
These scenarios are not aiming at predicting the future, but at guiding an interactive, time driven process. In this way, the new scenarios are built into a dynamic process of negotiation between social scientists, ecologists, town planners and civil society representatives.
